I was turning a piece of wenge, a brown and black wood that I thought was beautiful, but now in my mind I use words like angry, hateful, vengeful. And vicious to describe it. The wood caught and sent a chunk flying while I was turning it to round. It caught a few more times while I was doing this, and during one of them, my lathe offset. I don't think it is off center, it's a much different problem. The sanding disk which is connected to the live center metal turning piece, will continue to move about an inch after I stop the turning stock. And when I turn the lathe on, I can hear the jolt as the sanding disk doesn't start rotating with the rest and is suddenly brought up to speed after an impact forces it. I asked Matt to look at it yesterday, and he said that he would, that it might just need a locking screw put in place, or it could be unsafe to work on altogether. I don't think he has worked on it yet.
So, I can't use the lathe for anything until he has cleared it for me. And he sleeps stupid late, and takes naps.
Plus, my allergies have been bad last night and are today. I think I must not have had a good seal on my respirator, because I could smell the wenge while I was turning it. (It smells like a pub bathroom, I'm not joking. Like beer and stale piss)
Speaking of that evil wenge, I literally could not wipe the dust off myself like normal when I was done, every piece of it clung to my clothes with sharp splinter edges, and would stick me when I tried.
