Fish to Fry by Jim Peterson

 Fish to Fry

An unsolved murder, a flock of thieves
circling the city among pigeons, a bomb
threat and the real thing raining debris
into the streets, these are the fish fried
in the same pan day after day. And if
the young girl escapes the rapist's grasp,
plunging into the shocked headlights
of a busy road, her story is thrown
back into the pond of her own dreams,
a shark lurking among the bass and bream.
But if she disappears for day, if her
body is found in the woods, every drop
of the spirit squeezed out of her like
water from a new sponge, flash-bulbs
sprout up around her like magic tulips,
voices crawl into her wounds like insects,
the hands of white-coated me break her
further open like so much suspicious fruit.
It is the clues they want,  the innuendoes
of brutality, of the final bursting into
flames of her desire to live. Next day,
we will feed upon her as the killer fed,
our eyes moving from column to column
like he wild boar's snout over ground.
By afternoon, her story will be fit
kindling for the evening fire, fit
wrapping for the last lucky catch at dusk.

This poem caught me off-guard, looking for the other poem in my book. (Which it turned out not to be in this book, but written by the editor of this book, who taught a winter class at my school. Maybe it was on a handout?)  I start halfway down the page, and I see the drama of the news, the way things are reported, the way events should be handled, but are not. It really is like reliving the pain all over again, and must be hell on the families.

I would have posted a link but I could only find it online in an online copy of the book I'm holding now, Commonwealth: Contemporary Poets of Virginia

OK so that's where you can find a free copy of the book online :)

Remembering a poem from college Conviction by R.T Smith (My favorite teacher!)

Conviction

Watching birds forage the scrawny
lawn for seeds, I admit:
I have been cruel to a student.
Indirect, yet no less effective
for that. The poem about her cat's
"unrelenting love" as comfort
against a colder world
incited my wry analysis
of pet emotions, warnings against
sentiment run amok. A brace
of wrens peck the capsized
feeder. The wind must have done it.
A cardinal scratches after sunflower
husks from the songbird mix.
What do such wild things know
of emotion, sacrifice or moral
systems? Too simple to resist
instinct, they are almost machines —
that was my position, but now I'm
no longer convinced. I saw her
flinch and bite the lining
of her lip for composure. I should
have reviewed clichés or said,
"Strike new fire from the old
motions." What else could I have
told her? Jays and mourning doves,
swifts in their mad circle, and one
mockingbird in the jackpine: all
affirm the hard indictment.
I have been cruel, not as the hawk
is cruel or the cat with his captive
cricket, but in human fashion,
and I will carry this sin with me,
long after winter has withdrawn
these birds. There is no clemency
in the matter I can understand.

Sex in a dressing room yesterday before the munch!
I had never had sex in a public place before and it was so scary! but then it felt really awesome and i stopped worrying a little. I kept almost dropping my panties every time I started to like it, and then I would panic again. It was so so much fun.  When we got home, he fucked me the rest of the way. It was amazing. And he came on my stomach.

The past week has been a flurry of visiting people, going to appointments, and going to see doctors and all kinds of things.

I've had weird dreams, nightmares where I couldn't find my Daddy and my phone wouldn't call him and weeping angels were all over the square in downtown hickory.

I've had dreams where people turned into half-zombie half werewolf, and we were trying to outrun the outbreak and collect supplies, and i realized I could hurt them with a nail gun, so i was taking a hammer, getting to high ground, (the tops of buildings people had built stairs up to from the outside only) and taking apart wooden steps so i could use the nails holding them together as bullets.

I went to matt's house yesterday and cleaned, and spent the night. We're watching a tv series together.

I want to start watching Jekyll with Daddy again soon.
